Just 5-10 years ago, buying a smartphone presented many options that were often quite different from each other. The Android phones of the time – particularly those released by Samsung – usually had many new, innovative features; while the Apple iPhone was a more polished product and generally better supported.
Nowadays, the differences between them have shrunk significantly. Even cheap Android devices are now powerful enough to do most day-to-day tasks that the average user would need. The difference in new devices versus ones that were released a few years ago has also decreased. They are no longer a radical step up, so many people are choosing to delay getting a new phone to save some money.
If you are on the lookout for a new device, then it’s worth comparing the latest models to see which one is right for you.
All of these smartphones are capable of undertaking the majority of tasks that you would expect from a device bought in 2020. They can be used for web browsing, sending emails and other messages, social media, online shopping, and even streaming movies and TV.
The power of the device is not the main limiting factor for mobile devices, so your streaming abilities will be more affected by how fast and stable your internet connection is. For example, 3MB/s should be sufficient to stream standard definition content from mainstream providers like Netflix and Hulu, as well as niche services like PokerStars TV, which airs full-length television shows, classic clips, and interviews, or CuriosityStream, which has a library of documentaries in various subjects
OnePlus 7 Pro
The OnePlus brand of phones has gained a lot of respect in a very short period of time. Its lower price and high specs give you a lot of bang for your buck, and the 7 Pro is no exception. Coming in 128GB and 256GB versions, with options for 6, 8, or 12GB of RAM, you’ll have plenty of storage and power at your fingertips.
It has a true all-screen display (with no notches), an under-screen fingerprint scanner, and a screen wraparound for good measure. To get around the no notches, OnePlus fitted it with a pop-up front-facing camera, which hides itself back inside the device when you’re not using it.
On the back, it has three camera lenses, so you can get some really sharp pictures. It’s also got great night mode settings that will make you look like a pro. Although the 7T Pro has now been released, it’s very similar, so you can afford to save a little cash and go with the slightly older version.
Samsung Galaxy S20
Coming in at double the cost of the OnePlus, Samsung’s new flagship phone brings some serious improvements over the S10. It has a 64MP camera with 3x optical zoom, meaning you can finally get close up photos without losing the quality.
The front camera has fewer megapixels than the OnePlus, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the same level of quality. Samsung has followed the trend of using three lenses for the back.
Crucially, it supports 5G, which will mean many more people will now be able to take advantage of the new networks that are being rolled out.
Apple iPhone 11 Pro
Like the Apple Watch 5, the iPhone 11 Pro is now 6 months old. Despite that, it is still the premium option when choosing a new phone. It has a wider selection of available accessories, and it will hold its value better than any Android device.
It doesn’t have 5G support, which is disappointing but not shocking from a company that didn’t add 3G to the iPhone until its 2nd version.
Its screen quality is impressive, giving it one of the best experiences for playing games or watching videos on the go.
The camera is also fantastic, although the picture quality itself is not the most impressive feature. When you’re recording a video, it’s possible to shoot it from each rear lens separately. This means that you can get a standard, close up, and wide-angle shot all at the same time, and then add them together when you edit it.
The Folding Phones
There are also a few folding phone options on the market now too. The two main ones are the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G and the Motorola Razr 2020. While these are exciting products, it’s probably best to let the foldable screen technology mature a little more first since reviewers have continued to hit problems.
